    What Color is That?

Some time ago my buddy Rick and his coworker were having a meal at a popular local restaurant in La Paz (Bufalito). With Rick’s coworker was his young son and his father was teaching him about colors in Spanish.

“What color is that?” his father asked, pointing at a red item. “Rojo,” his son answered.

“And what color is that?” his father asked, pointing at a green object. “Verde,” his son answered.

“And what color is that?” his father asked again, pointing at a blue chair. “Asshole,” his son replied, creating a shocked silence. Then, one of the two Americans who was sitting on one of the blue chairs said: “I think he means you,” referring to his buddy.

Note: The Spanish word for “blue” is “azul.” You can see how the boy made the mistake – or maybe not. To this day, the word “blue” never fails to get a reaction from my friends.

Also from Rick was the other thing he would often say, when someone would ask for or do something indescribably stupid, Rick would say: “I have to check with Mr. Dumass on that one.” One day I finally asked him, “Who is Mr. Dumass? Rick answered, “It’s short for dumb ass.” We had a great laugh over that one.

Never a dull moment with my friends, Mexican or otherwise.
