The Importance of Friendships and Relationships

I had no intention of writing any more articles about relationships, at least not those about intimate relationships. What has come to mind over the last few days is the importance of relationships in all walks of life.

To be sure, intimate relationships are important and having the right partner in your life can buoy your spirits or drag you down, but in this case, I want to speak about relationships in a broader sense, those of friendship and business.

For a long time, I thought spiritual practice was my highest value and now, due to life experiences, I’ve had to re-evaluate that, especially in light of being homeless a few times in the past month. If it wasn’t for two friends, (Doug and Burt), I’d still be sleeping in my car, or possibly spending time at a homeless shelter.

To say that I’m extremely grateful would be an understatement. And even more so when I checked out the government resources only to discover that none would apply to me. At a local organization (Cool Aid), I learned that a person with mental problems, drug issues, and/or on welfare would rank higher for help than I would.

To top it all off, I was told by one of the case workers that by working and caring for myself, even a little, I had actually created a liability, and that it would be better if I was on welfare. I was disgusted by that. Part of the reason I returned to Canada was to make use of these resources and to be denied was a shocking, bitter lesson.

Once again I learned about the importance of good friends and building great relationships. Ironically, writing this blog has brought many great people into my life, for which I am truly grateful. It has also brought some business opportunities which I’m in the process of developing.

At this point I’d like to invite you, as my readers, to make comments about how relationships have affected your life in a positive way. I’d like to hear your stories and share those with other readers, with the intention that all will benefit.

For those of you who want to write to me privately, you can do so here.

Thanks for reading. See you next time.
