Tales of the Underground Online Seminar

A shot of Los Angeles taken from the back porch of the Marriot Hotel. What was I doing here? Participating in Yanik Silver’s Underground Online Seminar. For those of you who don’t know who he is, Yanik is one of the more well known figures in the world of Internet Marketing.

As a side note, the curved perspective is the result of the lens of my point and shoot camera. In future articles I’ll show you how to correct that distortion.

    Jeff Mulligan and Nathan Segal

This photo is of my business mentor, Jeff Mulligan. After years of working together, we finally met each other for the first time. For those of you who are curious as to how I can afford to travel, you’ll want to pay special attention to this section.

Jeff successfully mentored me through the creation of my most recent ebook, “The Corel PHOTO-PAINT X3 Insider.” It’s a direct result of my relationship with Jeff that made my travels possible, but I’m getting ahead of myself.

I met Jeff several years ago as a result of an online search I did on Internet marketing. What I found was a product known as “Protege.” (created by well known Internet marketer Terry Dean, which has since been taken off the market.)

At the time, I was really frustrated with my marketing results. I’d worked with a program known as Site Build It and I used it to create a site based on Photoshop tutorials. I followed the directions as far as I could go, but the site was a total flop, generating only $1,500.00 in Adsense sales.

At the time that I encountered Jeff, I’d bought a manual by James Martell, another well-known Internet marketer. Unfortunately, I didn’t like his methods and the high sense of uncertainty.

When I found the Protege’ site, I also saw that Jeff had listed his phone number. Upon calling him, I was amazed. I could actually speak to a real human being, as opposed to being shunted through systems as I was with the other products.

One of the things that Jeff asked me was, “Who is your guru?” As I’d mentioned, that seemed to be James Martell, but I was frustrated by not being able to speak to him directly, only his staff members. After speaking with Jeff a number of times, that’s what sold me on the program, and I decided to buy it. (at the time, the price was $495.00US, which seemed like a lot of money.)

When I got the Protege’ program, I discovered that it was focused on creating your own products, as opposed to working with affiliate programs, as so many people do. With Jeff’s help, I quickly realized that my former material online had great potential as an ebook, so I took down the site and set about transforming my material into a printed form.

Once that was complete, I set about looking for joint-venture partners. Due to confidentiality agreements, I’m unable to tell you exactly what happened, but I was able to reuse my material and the end result was quite successful. Now, I’m looking to repeat that success with another product, which is now in the works. Stay tuned!

Kudos to Jeff for his tireless efforts in mentoring me. It’s a direct result of his efforts that things worked out as well as they did. If you encounter a mentor like Jeff, treasure that person and give him/her your respect.

The point here is simple, Internet marketing works (in my experience), but you might fail several times before you succeed. At the Underground, I picked up a quote which I like very much. It goes like this:

Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”

    ~ Winston Churchill.
