Playing the Musical Saw in La Paz

Yesterday (Feb. 28) in La Paz, we were treated to a rare experience, a man playing a musical saw, close to one of our favorite hangouts, Cafe’ Exquisito.

Note: Please be patient while this page loads. There’s a lot of video; I promise you, it will be worth it.

As you’ll see in these videos, this man (Rafael) is a master. In the past, I’ve met people who can play the musical saw, but none of them can hold a candle to this guy. He’s amazing. He played several classics for us, such as: “O Solo Mio,” “Besame’ Mucho” and others.

Here’s a clip where he’s teaching me how to play (these were filmed by Laura). Much more is available on Laura’s Youtube site.

He told us how he’s played in different locations all over the world. Apparently there’s a big event which takes place in New York city in July. It’s his intention to be there.

I hope you enjoy watching these videos as much as we enjoyed being there.

    Paz.

  • The event in July he mentioned must be the annual Musical Saw Festival – last year 53 saw players from all over the world played there, and they got into the Guinness Book of Records for the largest musical saw ensemble: http://www.musicalsawfestival.org – there’s a video there of the Guinness thing. Wild. I’m not surprised this guy wants to go there – it’s like the Mecca of all saw players.
