Never Refuse an Old Man with Tequila

A couple of years ago I was hanging out in La Paz and I had the opportunity to do some photography for a friend, in the form of an architectural shoot in the home of one his clients.

As luck would have it, they were at home while I was shooting and I had the opportunity to meet them. Afterwards, we gathered in the living room and I was introduced to the patriarch of the household.

After a few pleasantries, he pulled out a bottle of tequila. I was about to refuse when my friend put his arm in front of me and said to me in English: “Never refuse an old man with tequila.” Dubiously, I accepted a shot and, imitating the others, I tossed it back.

When my head came down, I was astonished. The tequila had excellent flavor; in fact, it was the best I’d ever tasted and I almost accepted a second shot. And before you ask, I didn’t get the name of the tequila, much to my regret. All I recall is that it was Reposado (medium quality) and was in a clear, ornate glass bottle.
