This is a rather unpleasant term to describe American travelers but it could apply equally to many people from different countries. At its root, the “ugly” term is often used to describe a traveler who compares where they are to where they come from. Several years ago I left Canada with the intention of leaving forever. Unforseen circumstances brought me back and those circumstances were my financial education that I received from many Americans I met in La Paz and El Triunfo. A couple of weeks ago I was sitting in a business network meeting and we were discussing the HST tax war (Harmonized Sales Tax) in British Columbia, led by former premier Bill Van Der Zalm (which was defeated in a referendum). I was telling my friend that I was standing shoulder to shoulder with Doug Christie at the first of many of the HST protests.
