The Importance of Mexican Vehicle Insurance: Buy It Before You Come to Mexico

Filed under: Baja California Sur, Nathan's Travel Tips; Tagged as: car insurance, expired tags, insurance limitations, liability, license tags, mexican insurance, tags, valid insurance, vehicle insurance

Before you come to Mexico you must buy Mexican insurance. In our case, I bought it in Palm Springs. It cost only $199.00USD for 6 months. Technically, insurance isn’t necessary, but if you wind up in an accident, the police come and you don’t have insurance, you’ll go to jail…..

Internet Service in Mexico: Part 1, Telecable

Filed under: Nathan's Travel Tips; Tagged as: adsl, cable internet, cable internet service, cable internet service mexico, megacable, mexico, telecable, telmex

When I first arrived in Bucerias, some 5 years ago, I was faced with the issue of getting the Internet in my apartment. There were two options, Telmex, with a service similar to ADSL and Telecable, a new service in town. Since Telecable seemed similar to Shaw Cable in Victoria, I opted for that service.

The Quest to Find a Quad Band (4G) GSM World Phone

Filed under: Nathan's Travel Tips; Tagged as: 4g, gsm phone, quad band, quad band world phone, unlock phone, unlocking, world phone

A couple of years ago, I was getting ready to go on another trip to the US and Mexico. In preparation, I wanted to get myself a new phone, one that would be quad band (4G) and would support chips that I could install in each country, instead of having to buy a new phone. This is what I learned…

How to Deal With Fragrance Allergies in Mexico

Filed under: Nathan's Travel Tips; Tagged as: allergies, detergents, fragrance allergies, no bleach, no chloro, no fragrance, no suave scenta

One of the down-sides to living in Mexico has to do with the powerful fragrances they use in soaps and detergents. If you’re sensitive to different fragrances and perfumes, a walk down the cleaning products aisle can knock you on your butt. This is my problem as well.

    A Case of Mislabeling?

This post is about the product above, supposedly about something you would use for dry, cracked skin.
That’s the idea. But when I looked at this my mind went in the wrong direction…

Why a Dictionary is Necessary When Shopping in Mexico

Filed under: Nathan's Travel Tips; Tagged as: alpiste, alpiste mixto, dictionaries, dictionary, labels, mixto, translations

In Mexico, not unlike any other country, people have different words for things, like this package above, which we found in the rice section at Wal-Mart. From the look of it, we thought it was wild rice and didn’t think anything more about it – until tonight.

    Dangers and Annoyances: Sidewalks

Filed under: Nathan's Travel Tips; Tagged as: annoyances, broken concrete, concrete, dangers, La Paz, malecon, root damage, sidewalks, tile work, uneven pavement

The sidewalks in Mexico can be very unpredictable, as you’ll see in this video. Some are downright dangerous and you really have to watch your step. I found this to be generally true as I traveled around Mexico; some places were more dangerous than others.
