Why a Dictionary is Necessary When Shopping in Mexico

    mixto

In Mexico, not unlike any other country, people have different words for things, like this package above, which we found in the rice section at Wal-Mart. From the look of it, we thought it was wild rice and didn’t think anything more about it – until tonight.

Laura was looking at the bag and was puzzled because there were no cooking directions, which baffled her.

That’s when she pulled out the dictionary to look up the word, “alpiste.”

That translated to, “birdseed,” in this case, “mixed birdseed.” So much for rice with our dinner tonight.
